LW Men’s Golf League

It was another overcast and damp morning that greeted six Leisure World Men’s Golf League players at the Willowick Golf course on Oct. 4. The weather contributed to above average scores as the ball did not travel well in the air or over the ground.

There were only two rounds net under par and there were just three birdies—one each by Dave LaCascia, Chris Lankford and Clay Fischer. Fewest putts for the group was won by LaCascia. Fujio Norihiro was closest to the pin on the 150-yard par-3 fourth hole, and Fischer was closest on the 140-yard par-3 12th.

Willowick is paying much more attention to course maintenance and the effort is showing. Fairways are greening up with consistent watering, and greens continue to be in great shape. With several very long par 5s and par 4s, having manicured fairways that allow the ball to roll is needed to get better scores. This is happening slowly, but improvements are seen every time the league plays.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).

Winners: Fisher, 8 under 63, first place; LaCascia, 1 under 70, second; followed by Lankford at even par, then Bob Munn, Gary Stivers and Norihiro.

Eleven players faced the River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on Oct. 7. The weather was overcast and cool, but with a reasonably dry course. Significant elevation changes and long Santa Ana Riverbed fairway crossovers make this course challenging. With good playing conditions six of the 11 golfers managed a net under par score.

Sam Choi had fewest putts for the A flight, and Tom Ross had fewest in the B. Closest to the pin contest was won by Sam Choi on No. 2 and Gary Stivers on No. 9. Choi had two birdies, Clay Fischer and Jim Goltra had one each. Additionally, Bob Munn, once again, shot his age (gross 90) which is an accomplishment several of the golfers have achieved this year.

A flight winners: Dave La-Cascia, 6 under par 65, first place; Fischer, 3 under 68, second; Goltra, 2 under 69, third; Larry Hillhouse, fourth, followed by Stivers, Choi, and Fujio Norihiro in a tie for fifth.

B flight winners: Bob Munn, 8 under 63, first place; Tom Ross, 4 under 67, second; followed by Bill Zurn and Duke Park tied for third.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight.
