Pastor’s Message
Treachery and deception continue to play out in Genesis 37 as Pastor Bruce Humes continues the story of Isiah’s son Joseph and his brothers.
The brothers are out in a field pasturing their flock. Genesis 37:18 reads, “now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired to kill him.” The desolate, open land of Israel provides a convenient place to put him to death. The oldest brother Reuben initially comes to Joseph’s defense and says, “Let us not take his life. Throw him into this pit in the wilderness so that we might later return him to father.”
Upon Joseph’s arrival, they strip him of his tunic, a source of much of their hatred for him, and at the suggestion of Judah, they sell him as a slave to a traveling band of Ishmaelites.
Joseph is sold into slavery in Egypt, and a plot is devised to deceive Israel concerning the fate of his favorite son.
God will work all this out in his timing, for his purpose, and for his glory. Joseph will be instrumental in God’s plan to provide a homeland for his people.
