CalFresh sign up event is today

Eligible LWers can sign up to receive free money to purchase food today, Sept. 19, from 9-11 a.m., in Clubhouse 4 Ceramics Room. CalFresh representatives will be on site to help residents determine their eligibility and sign up for SNAP/EBT benefits.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), otherwise known as food stamps, gives people the resources to access healthy food. Those who qualify receive monthly benefits on an EBT card that works like a debit card, which can be used to purchase food and prepared meals from participating grocery stores and restaurants.

A one-person household making no more than $2,430 monthly can receive $23-291 a month. A two-person household making no more than $3,228 monthly can receive $23-535 a month. To qualify for CalFresh, people must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. People do not need to have Medi-Cal or Medi-Care to be eligible. To apply, bring the photo ID, Social Security number and proof of income. People may also need their resident cards, proof of expenses or bank statements if they want to qualify based on their household resources.

Households with less than $4,250 in resources may also qualify for SNAP, even if they make above the monthly income limit. Resources include cash in hand or in the bank, stocks and bonds or inheritances.

People over the age of 60 and those living with disabilities can also apply and maintain their benefits. Households with an elderly or disabled member can use their gross income minus applicable deductions to determine eligibility.
