OLLI offers folk dancingclasses to LW residents
LW male and female residents are welcome to attend the United Nations of Dance and Music folk dance classes beginning Jan. 8 on Wednesday afternoons from 1-3, in the Women’s Club of Bellflower at 9402 Oak Street, Bellflower.
The classes are free and offered through the CSULB Osher Lifelong Learning Institute program. They adopt the dancing patterns from different world cultures, including Schottiches, Syrtos, Sambas and Polkas, Horas, Pravos, Halays and Tamzaras.
During the fall season, members learned Bulgarian dance Varnenska Tropenka, Croatian Moj Dragane, Taiwanese Jie Jiu Ge, South African Jerusalema and more. Each class begins with a warm up of muscles and joints. The facility has a responsive wood floor ideal for dancing. Comfortable shoes that allow for lateral movement are recommended.
The instructor, Diane Baker, is a life-long learner, dedicated dancer and retired physical educator who enjoys world travel and making new friends. Those who enjoy cultural awareness and moderate activity, or may experience cognitive challenges are welcome.
