LW Men’s Golf League

It was a sunny morning to play golf on Oct. 21, but upon arrival at the par-62 David L. Baker Golf Course, 12 men’s golf league players encountered a very wet course. Greens were still sandy and uneven after recent aeration and will be for another week or so. With driving areas receiving maintenance, tees were set close to the front of each box, which shortened all the holes and actually made some of the shorter par 4s drivable. Players took advantage of using short irons after a good drive to approach the greens and everyone scored very well. Each player had a net under par score.

A flight winners: Fujio Norihiro shot a 1 over 63 gross score—a rare feat—with a 45 net score and easily took first place; Larry Hillhouse, second; Dave LaCascia and Sam Choi, third; followed by Gary Stivers, Chris Lankford, Seon Kim and Jim Goltra.

B flight winners: Duke Park, 12 under 50; Daniel Mahoney, second; Tom Ross, third; Bob Munn, fourth.

Birdies were carded by Norihiro, LaCascia, Choi, Hillhouse, Kim and two by Lankford. Norihiro and Park had fewest putts for the round. Closest to the pin on No. 3 was Munn, and on No. 12 was Hillhouse.

In another very foggy and extremely damp morning, seven players gathered at the par-71 River View Golf Course on Oct. 25.

At the 7 a.m. tee time, golfers could not see 100 yards down fairways due to the dense fog and required cooperation between groups to prevent driving up on the foursome in front. The fog pulsed in and out for the first 10 holes and then slowly burned away. By round’s end the sun had been out for about an hour with blue sky showing.

Bob Munn was closest on the 140-yard par-3 second— which no golfer could see at the time— and Dave LaCascia was closest to the pin on the 100yard par-3 ninth hole. Birdies were carded by LaCascia, with two each by Chris Lankford and Jim Goltra. Gary Stivers, Sam Choi and Goltra tied for fewest putts.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).

Winners: LaCascia, 4 under 67, first place; Fujio Norihiro and Goltra, 3 under 68, second; Stivers, 2 under 69, third; Choi, Lankford and Munn, fourth.

Ten players challenged the par-71 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach on Oct. 28. The weather was sunny but cool with a moderate wind and a wet course. With the added variable of wind, distance determination and proper club selection was a challenge.

Larry Hillhouse had fewest putts in the A flight and Duke Park had fewest in the B. Closest to the pin contests on holes No. 7 and No. 16 were both won by Jim Goltra. Hillhouse and Goltra each had two birdies, and Gary Stivers, Bob Munn and Sam Choi had one.

A flight winners: Hillhouse, 8 under par 63, first place; Stivers, 5 under 66, second; Goltra. third; Clay Fischer, fourth; Choi, fifth; Dave LaCascia, Fujio Norihiro and Chris Lankford, sixth.

B flight winners: Munn, first; Park, second.
