Editor:
Thank you to the GRF Board for offering the wonderful Salvation Army donation event! No matter what your political affiliation, everyone benefited. It warmed my heart to see the board and residents helping unload the cars and assisting where needed. A special thank you to Mike Banfield who organized the event. It takes a village, and the village was “in sync” that day. Good job! I look forward to the next event.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the wonderful initiative taken by the Recreation Department in organizing the screened movie event on Sept. 21 in Clubhouse 4. In a time when social connections are more important than ever, their efforts have provided a much-needed opportunity for residents to come together and enjoy a afternoon of entertainment.
The choice of the movie “Nomadland” was not only entertaining but also thoughtprovoking.
The event was planned with comfortable seating arrangements, good sound quality and a large screen that ensured that everyone had a great view.
What stood out the most was the attendance of over 75 residents sharing laughter. In a world where digital interactions often overshadow face-to-face connections, such events are invaluable in strengthening the bonds within Leisure World.
Thank you to GRF and the Recreation Department for enhancing the quality of life in Leisure World. I hope to see more such events in the future.

In the final sentence of a letter written by Earick Ward (Sept. 12), it says “make America great (and healthy) again,” which followed his description and quotes by RFK Jr.
Is this exemplar of what a healthy America looks like? The guy who planted a dead bear in Central Park, who sawed off the head of a whale and took it home; who explained to some that his behavior was due to a worm eating part of his brain, who, according to Ward’s letter, states his father and uncle would be astonished by Kamala Harris’ campaign behavior.
What is known is RFK Jr.’s living family are not astonished by his behavior but have written him off as someone not to be associated with.

On Sept. 17, more than 100 former national security officials from Republican administrations and former Republican members of Congress endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris after concluding that their party’s nominee, Donald J. Trump, is “unfit to serve again as president.”
“Donald Trump cannot be trusted ‘to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic . . . and bear true faith and allegiance to the same.’” We believe that Kamala Harris can, and we urge other Americans to join us in supporting her.”
Some voters may prefer some Trump policies, but these officials’ warnings should give them pause. This Republican voter will vote for Harris.

From the bottom of my heart, I am thankful for all who supported the Filipino Association of Leisure World’s luau dinner dance Sept. 7. It was a huge success. There was a lot of food, including my leche flan dessert. It is so delicious that it disappeared quickly. Leche flan is is similar to creme brûlée except there is no sugar coating on top. I ordered 20 pieces and two full sheet of King’s Hawaiian cakes, all of which were quickly devoured. No one leaves a Filipino party hungry, and there’s always extra to take home as is our tradition.
Everyone is welcome to attend every FALW party. Our last event for 2024 is the Simbang Gabi or Midnight Mass, which is a Philippine tradition before Christmas. More information will be coming in the LW Weekly.
A big thanks goes to all club members and officers who helped me prepare for the luau party. Thanks especially to Anna Derby and Michael Oh.

Double or even multiple billings to the elderly has gotten out of control.
If you get any billing for medical services of any kind, do not pay it until you confirm with your insurance company that your liability portion has been taken care of.
Human consideration for pride, honor and integrity seems to have gotten away from people determined to do some harm to others, including the elderly. Donald Trump is right. Letting the border crossing open without thoroughly checking the integrity, character and personality behaviors has caused what seems to be irreparable damage of different types to every American and to the fiber of pride that existed years ago in America. We are going in the wrong direction. America needs harsh criminal laws, not releasing thousands of criminals to the streets to criminalize honest, decent tax-abiding Americans. This proud Mexican American crossed the border in 1959, and I say, let’s start building a better America now.

It is interesting or frightening that next year, our country of over 300 million people will have for a president someone who talks like hope is a strategy or someone who talks like an 8-year-old who didn’t get a pony for his birthday. Yikes!
God, any god, help us (ain’t no time to be choosy).

The blockade at the gate is a dangerous and irritating decision. I am at the shuffleboard court at least three times a week and turn at Golden Rain and Del Monte to drive to my home in Mutual 14. To ask us to drive out of Leisure World, wait for a green light, then attempt to turn left at the second light in order to return to Leisure World can be hazardous, much less irritating. If there is no room for your car at that left turn, then you have no choice but to keep driving onto Seal Beach Boulevard.
The second choice to drive to St. Andrews is just as thoughtless. Decisions should be made with some wisdom as to how they affect us, including residents in their 80s. Please reconsider your decision and remove the barrier. It’s neither safe nor efficient.
