First Christian Church First Christian Church

First Christian Church of Leisure World teaches from God’s word, the Holy Bible, most often verse by verse. It is a friendly church that welcomes all visitors to join in worship and explore God’s word together, “That we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine,” Romans 1:12.

Pastor’s Message

Pastor Bruce Humes will speak from Genesis 31. Twenty years have passed since Jacob left his homeland. His brother Esau had vowed to kill Jacob. After getting close to his brother’s land, Jacob sends messengers to tell his brother of his arrival. They return with a report that Esau is coming to meet Jacob with 400 men. Jacob prepares for the worst.

Jacob prays and asks God to deliver him from an attack from his brother. As night falls, Jacob takes his immediate family, his two wives, two female servants, and his 11 sons and crossed over the ford of Jabbok, wanting to protect them while he waited alone for Esau. Genesis 32:24 reads, “Then Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until the break of day.” This man was none other than the angel of the Lord. As they wrestled, the Lord put the socket of Jacob’s hip out of joint.

Genesis 26-28 says “And the Lord said, ‘Let me go, for the day breaks.’ But Jacob said, ‘I will not let you go unless you bless me.’ So, he said, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘Jacob.’ And the Lord said, “‘Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.’” Jacob is no longer identified as the supplanter, but as Israel which means “Prince with God.”
