Medicare Mental Health Coverage

Taking care of mental health is just as important as taking care of physical health. Medicare covers many mental health services to support people when they need it. Cost shares can be found in individual plan documents.

Medicare Part A covers the admission to general or psychiatric hospitals.

Medicare Part B covers the following:

• Intensive outpatient program services at a hospital, community mental health center, federally qualified health center, rural health clinic, or opioid treatment program.

• Outpatientservicesreceived outside a hospital, in a doctor’s office or community mental health center. This includes outpatient services people might get as part of substance use disorder treatment.

• Partial hospitalization services received through a hospital outpatient department or community mental health center when certain requirements are met.

• Preventative screenings and counseling for depression, opioids, smoking and alcohol.

Medicare Part D covers many outpatient prescription drugs to treat mental health.
