Fujio Norihiro shoots his age during league play

LW MEN'S GOLF LEAGUE

Six Leisure World Men’s Golf League members and guest Scott Slade played at the 5,800-yard par-71 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach on July 26. It was a sunny morning that warmed up nicely; however, the course was very wet due to overnight watering.

Scores were above average for the round, while Fujio Norihiro shot his age (gross 84) with a net of 68 that translated into the low score for the flight. This was the third time this year that this feat has been accomplished. Clay Fischer was second at net par, Bill McKusky was third at net 63, followed by Gary Stivers, Chris Lankford and Sam Choi. Norihiro and Choi tied for fewest putts, while Lankford was closest to the pin on the 140-yard par 3 seventh hole. There were no birdies.

The league played the David L. Baker Executive Golf Course on July 29. Baker is a 4,000-yard, par-62 course that has the same number of par 3s as par 4s and no par 5s. It is challenging due to numerous water hazards and devilishly placed sand traps.

Due to vacations and the continued warm and humid weather, just seven golfers started the round. Clay Fischer took first place with net 58 plus a birdie and was closest to the pin on the 100-yard par 3 third hole and 140-yard par 3 12th hole. Fuji Norihiro was second with net 61. Sam Choi and Gary Stivers tied for third place. Bill Zurn, Tom Ross and Bill McKusky tied for fourth. Sam Choi had a birdie and fewest putts for the round.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing should contact Gary Stivers at 714313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
