Club will honor MLK Jr. on Tuesday, Jan. 17 in CH 3

SENIOR PEACE CLUB

The Senior Peace Club will honor Martin Luther King Jr. at a special event on Tuesday, Jan. 17, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 3. People can drop in for any period of time between 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and bring their cell phones to make calls to U.S. senators to urge them to honor MLK by voting for the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

The Act was passed by the House of Representatives in 2020 and remains stalled in the Senate. It would restore the protections that were gutted from the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by the Supreme Court in 2013. Voter suppression disproportionately prevents minorities, the elderly and youth from voting and harms our democracy.

Phone numbers and scripts of what to say will be provided. Often callers will reach an answering machine or staff members of the senators, who are usually friendly and will take the caller’s information and agree to pass it on. They may ask for the caller’s zip code, as they tend to be more responsive to those who can vote for them. However, they need to be reminded that they represent the whole country and should care about protecting the rights of everyone.

King’s birthday will be observed as a national holiday on Jan. 16, and government offices will be closed, so the event has been planned for the day after the holiday when government offices re-open. Coffee will be available at the meeting.

The club is collecting clothing and bedding for the homeless. Anyone who would like to help is asked to bring unwanted men’s clothing, shoes and bedding, especially items to ward off the cold and rain, to the meeting or call Pat Kruger at 909-838-8666 or 562-357-4040 before the meeting to arrange for a donation pick up.
