The prototype for LW's iconic Amphitheater, now almost 60 years old, was apparently a Southern California landmark. Resident historian William Thompson of Mutual 5 had heard that the Amphitheater design was based on the Hollywood Bowl. He was prompted to investigate because LW's Amphitheater is not classic "bowl" architecture. Upon further research, he learned that the LW structure was based on the first Hollywood Bowl, which opened in July 1922.
