Peaceful protest will focus on voting rights and voter suppression

The Senior Peace Club’s next peaceful protest will be held in front of the Leisure World Globe on Wednesday, July 28, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The focus will be voting rights and voter suppression.
When the Supreme Court first began to defang the Voting Rights Act in its Shelby County decision in 2013, John Roberts wrote that “things have changed dramatically” in the South, and racial discrimination no longer warranted approval of voting procedures by the federal government. He couldn’t have been more wrong. Arizona’s voting restrictions, as well as those in other states, disproportionately affect minorities. The right to vote is an essential human right, and every time an eligible American voter is denied his or her right to vote because of restrictive and discriminatory laws, it is a threat to democracy. The growing trend of states implementing laws making it more difficult to vote under the guise of stopping “voter fraud,” for which there is no evidence that it is even an existing problem in this country, must be vehemently protested.
Signs will be available at the demonstration, but people are encouraged to make and bring their own appropriate signs. All caring and concerned people are welcome to participate.
