Court improvements make a big difference

Over the last year, the GRF has made a concerted effort to modernize the shuffleboard courts. The Shuffleboard Club has also worked hard to improve the opportunities to involve more Leisure World residents in shuffleboard to maximize the use of the courts and the building.
For the first time in the last decade, the Shuffleboard Club has extended league play into June. Before the addition of four wall-mounted fans and eight ceiling exhaust turbines, very few people used the building during the summer months. Between June and August 2019, 172 people signed in to the building for shuffleboard play. The building was closed during the summers of 2020-2021 due to COVID.
With the relatively lowcost improvements of fans and turbines, 2024 summer use of the courts is anticipated to sharply increase. It is estimated there will be approximately 300 attendees for June. Plans for the month of July include having the building open and ready for open play, hosted by club members, at least six hours weekly plus two Saturday mornings for an additional four hours. Although there are no regular league tournaments scheduled, there is excitement for small groups to competitively play their own mini tournaments in July and August.
Regular league play is scheduled to begin Sept. 20.
The regular open play June schedule includes Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-11. Everyone is welcome— the only requirement is to wear closed-toe shoes. The club provides all other equipment plus assistance to those who have never played shuffleboard. One of the great things about open play is players will likely play with people they don’t know well; a time to build new friends. For more information, contact Patty Peterson at 562-714-7072.
The final games for the spring Tuesday evening league were played June 11. Team Chandra outpaced Team Rod winning 7 of 12 games. Sandy Derouin and substitute Donna Gorman were all-game winners for Team Chandra while Sal LaScala and Anne Calvo won the all-game honors for Team Rod.
Team Sally outpaced Team Karen/Sue winning 7 of 12 games. Sally Fowler and Carol Schubeck were all-game winners for Team Sally while Mark Scott was the all-game winner for Team Karen/Sue.
