SEAL BEACH

On Friday, Aug. 30, the Seal Beach Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint from 7 p.m.-3 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.

People are reminded that prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving.

These can include sedatives, anti-seizure medications, diet pills, cold and flu medicines, muscle relaxants, opiods, anxiety medications, medicines that treat motion sickness, diarrhea or bladder control medications and stimulants, among others.

Those who are unsure about the side effects of a medication or interactions between multiple medications should talk to their physician, especially when taking a new medication. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead and make responsible choices,” Seal Beach Police Chief Michael Henderson said. “If you plan to consume alcohol, please designate a sober driver, use ride-sharing services, or utilize public transportation to ensure a safe journey home. Your safety is our priority.”

While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
