TRIBUTE TO RAFAEL MENDEZ

Richard Freedman on trumpet and Yuri Lotakov at the piano will perform a concert in tribute to legendary composer Rafael Mendez at 3 p.m. on April 13 in Clubhouse 4.

The legendary Mexican-American trumpeter, composer, arranger, actor and teacher Rafael Mendez (1906-1981) was famous for his tone, range, technique and unparalleled double tonguing.

He was also the first trumpeter in history to record the “Moto Perpetuo,” by Niccolo Paganini.

Freedman started his trumpet studies at the age of 8. He began to play professionally when he was 12.

He took a 35-year hiatus from music to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Upon his retirement, Freedman returned to his music. He has a website, richiestrumpets. com, which chronicles his musical journey.

Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Lotokov completed his doctorate at Kyiv State Conservatory and launched a major performing and teaching career.

Upon immigrating to the United States, Lotakov performed extensively as a soloist, and with various symphony orchestras.

He is currently the resident concert pianist of the Leisure World Orchestra.

In addition to Rafael Mendez tribute, the concert includes solo pieces, and a performance by Lotakov and his wife, Luba, performing piano ensemble for four hands. All are welcome to attend. — Luba Lotakov
