WA-RITE

Wa-Rite is a female-only club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown. Women who want support on their weight-loss journey and to meet like-minded people are welcome to stop by no late Mutual elections r than 8:15 to weigh-in and complete the registration paperwork.

At the March 14 meeting, members learned that the club lost a total of 25.5 pounds in one week. The biggest loser was new member Ruth Stewart with a 3-pound loss. She said she didn’t deprive herself of anything but stayed consistent by eating less.

Gay Gould spoke about an interesting study conducted on blue zones around the world, where many people live to be 100 or more with no signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia. She said people in blue zones have few things in common, referred to as N.E.U.R.O. It stands for Nutrition (leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, beans, berries, tea and spices and herbs); Exercise (aerobics, weight training and stretching); Unwind (meditation, yoga, walking or listening to the music); Restore (getting 8 hours of sleep; limiting TV time, following circadian rhythm and going to bed at the same time every night); and Optimize (reading a book or a magazine and discussing it, knitting, painting or sewing, doing a jigsaw puzzles, staying socially active, dancing and learning new hobby.

Other things that people in blue zones do are walking and gardening, getting up every morning with a purpose, volunteering, eating until satisfied but not full, enjoying red wine or grapes and favoring a plant-based diet. In the United States, there is only one blue zone region, added Gould, it is Loma Linda, California.

The weekly food for thought was: “When I feel unmotivated, I take a good look at how far I’ve come.”
