South Coast Orchid Society

On Monday, March 24, from 7-9 p.m., the South Coast Orchid Society of Long Beach will host a program by Carol Beule on “Kyoto, Nara, and the Japan Fuukiran Society,” as part of its 75th anniversary theme, “Orchid Journeys.” The meeting will be held at Whaley Park Community Center, 5620 E. Atherton St., Long Beach, CA, 90815.
Beule will take the group on a journey from Kyoto to Nara, visiting temples and places of interest along the way, and then to the Japan Fuukiran Society meetings in Hamamatsu, Japan, featuring the fuukiran (“wind orchid”, Vanda falcata). It is a small but very tough little plant with an amazing fragrance and infinite variety in its flowers and foliage. The Japanese have revered it for centuries, and it inspires today’s orchid lovers to travel halfway around the world to see it at its best.
Beule is an Emmy award-winning costume designer with a Master of Fine Arts in both costume and lighting design. She was a professional costume designer from 1974 until her retirement in 2017. She has grown orchids in Southern California for decades, and is now an accredited American Orchid Society judge.
The event is free and open to the public. Orchids grown by the club’s members will be on display. For more information, email southcoastorchidsociety@gmail.com.
