Shredding service sees record numbers, donations

GOLDEN AGE FOUNDATION
The Golden Age Foundation’s (GAF) recent shredding service served a record of 485 cars on March 11.
A dozen brave GAF volunteers kept the line going despite the threat of a rainstorm that did not come. From 10a.mnoon, volunteers encountered a stream of cars stocked with shredding materials in plastic bags, paper brown bags, and sometimes in boxes. There were a few moments where there was time for volunteers to catch a breath and get some water before another wave of traffic began snaking through the line.
“We’ve never seen so many cars keep coming in a couple of hours,” GAF President Anna Derby said. “The 12 volunteers worked together beautifully, it was amazing to see them flawlessly handle hundreds of vehicles and hundreds of bags without any glitches.”
Shredding truck driver Joel Benitos reported that he collected 51large barrels of sensitive documents from the 485 cars that came through the line, another record for the GAF.
The GAF thanks volunteers Carl Kennedy, Harry Varnas, Rosemarie Da Rosa, Roberta Johnson, Sophie Jin, Linda Johnson, Cheryl Falconer, Fara Mccartney, and Anna Derby for their help in moving cars through the line, Tonette Tonya and Shery Wells for collecting donations, and Dave Forney for directing the heavy traffic.
The GAF would like to thank those who made generous donations to the GAF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In just two hours, the GAF collected $1,200 and will use the money to buy more battery recycling boxes to keep up with the need.
The next shredding event will be held on July 8. For more information about the GAF and its free services, go to www. GoldenAgeFdn.org.
