Members practiced journaling at March 11 meeting

LW ART LEAGUE
Jacki Long, retired art teacher and martial arts sensei, conducted a fascinating workshop on art journaling at the March 11 meeting of the Leisure World Art League.
Art journaling is an open-ended art form contained within a bound journal. It invigorates creativity by encouraging the collection and recording of thoughts, sketches, inspiring images and found objects. Long, referencing many of her 142-plus journals, inspired meeting attendees and challenged all to begin the practice immediately. Those in attendance were provided with art magazines, markers, pencils, scissors, crayons and a 30-page blank journal to being their own journal that evening. They were challenged fill a page a day with artistic inspiration for the next 30 days.
Long also judged the club’s monthly art competition. The first place winners were Carmen Leslie, masters category; Les Coombes, advanced; Marion Higgins and Daniel Prosak, intermediate; and Linda Frysinger, 3D/crafts. Those in attendance selected the best of show award, won by Marilyn Jonas. Mickey Costello won the popular vote award.
Each month, the Art League displays artwork from other creative clubs in LW. March’s display included pieces from the Claytime and Clay Crafters ceramics clubs. Clay Crafters attracts experienced ceramic artists, and Claytime is for those just beginning to explore ceramic arts. Claytime meets Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Clubhouse 4. Clay Crafters also meets in Clubhouse 4 on Mondays and Fridays from noon-4:30 p.m.
Leisure World resident artists who may not be members of the Art League are invited to participate in the League’s first annual “Art in Bloom” juried art exhibit on Sunday, June 22, in the Veterans Plaza.
