Long Term Care and Medicare

Medicare health insurance does not cover long-term custodial care. Custodial care is care in a home or nursing home that helps people with daily activities of living like bathing, dressing, using the bathroom and eating. Whether planning ahead or making a last-minute decision, there is a lot to consider when choosing the right nursing home for a loved one.

Although Medicare does not cover custodial care, it has excellent recourses to help people make an informed decision. Here are some tips that can choose an in-home help or a nursing home:

• Checkthefacility’sstarrating. The overall nursing home’s performance rating is based on three sources: health inspections, staffing and quality of residential care.

• View detailed staffing data including staff hours, different types of staff and their turnover rates.

• Last but not least—visit the nursing home you are considering.
