Join peaceful protest to save Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
Seniors For Peace invites all residents to join the peaceful protest in front of the LW globe on Saturday, April 5, from 3-4:30 p.m. in support of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
According to the Senior Citizens League, one of the largest nonpartisan seniors groups in the country, 27% of seniors rely on Social Security for 100% of their income. Approximately 66% of seniors rely on Social Security for more than half of their income. Social Security is the largest single item in the federal budget, representing just over 20%. Medicare is the second largest program in the federal budget, which is 14% or about $840 billion. Medicaid is the largest health insurance program in the United States, covering nearly 1 in 5 Americans, particularly seniors and people with disabilities. These vital supports are under threat as cuts of trillions of dollars from the federal budget are being considered.
To illustrate the potential impact on Leisure World, if 27% of LW’s 6,608 units, approximately 1,784, were to lose their income, the result would be catastrophic for those losing their income and significant for those who survive. If 1,784 units failed to pay their monthly GRF fee of $234.97, that would be a loss of approximately $419,186 each month. The burden of this shortfall would be on the remaining 4,824 units. The increased monthly fee would be approximately $322, an increase of about $1,056 per year. This does not account for those who rely on Social Security for more than half of their income, which would drive the burden even higher.
