LW Men’s Golf Club
The Leisure World Men’s Golf Club’s first tournament of the month was held Dec. 11 at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. The weather, for a change, was sunny at the first tee time, but very cold and extremely dry. Fifty-eight golfers competed in three flights and contended for best net (gross score minus handicap) scores, plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot circle rewarded) and two closest to the pin challenges.
Many of the golfers remarked that “My hands are cold, and the ball is not traveling this morning,” hence, distance control was a problem. Accordingly, only 17 of the 58 men were net at or under par, with just 41 birdies and only 10 circle hole winners, which was far fewer than previous weeks.
Closest to the pin on the second hole was Gene Archambault at 2 feet, 1 inch and on the 11th hole, it was Joon Sup Yoon at 3 feet, 4 inches. The average net score for all 58 players was 60 strokes or six strokes over par. The average gross score was 66.8—nearly 13 strokes over par. Apparently the cold and dryness had a major impact on scores as this week’s averages were well above previous rounds including playing on several foggy and damp days.
All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap). A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Rolando Ramirez, 2 under 52, first place; Gene Archambault and Alan Sewell, second; Young J. Kim, third; Mike Mayfield, fourth; Mark Rice, fifth; Bob Turner, Bob Johnston and Dong On Kim, sixth.
B flight winners (handicaps of 6-12): John Rudosky, 3 under 51, first place; James Farr and Andrew Kim, second; Trai Nguyen, third; Richard Yokomi and Hyon Shin, fourth; Ryan Hong and Bruce Bowles, fifth; Jae H. Lee, sixth; Jack Haskins, seventh.
C flight winners (handicaps of 13-18): New member Rod Osgood, 8 under 46, first place; Manny Miranda, second; Rick Reed, third; Lee Broadbent, fourth; Noe Alcaraz, fifth; Ron Jackson, sixth; Daniel Mahoney, seventh; James Choi, eighth; Joe Wierzbicki, ninth; Paul Shellenberger, tenth; Mark Tal, eleventh.
