Letters to the Editor
Editor:
A recent letter to the editor (Dec. 5) suggested that pedestrians try to protect themselves by establishing eye contact with drivers before entering a cross walk.
I have to wonder why I should assume drivers will notice me or my eyes when ap-parently most of them cannot see large stop signs with bright red flashing lights. My patio affords me a clear view of the intersection of Oakmont and El Dorado drives. On a daily basis I watch construction trucks, service vans, landscapers’ vehicles, golf carts, GRF carts, buses and nearly all passenger vehicles roll or, most often, accelerate through the intersection, completely ignoring the stop signs. Rarely does any driver come to a complete stop.
I can’t find anything in the California DMV manual that indicates stopping at stop signs is optional in Leisure World, so I assume drivers choose to break the law because they know they can do so with impunity. My strategy to keep myself safe is simply to not enter a crosswalk until there are no vehicles anywhere in sight.

Thank you for reminding readers of the opportunity to lease a space in the new Community Gardens. I applied, thinking all spaces would be taken but discovered there are still spots available.
The Community Gardens are beautifully laid out, with paths for easy access and hydrants available for each garden plot.
Th egardenerswhowemeet there are becoming new friends. Their treatments of individual garden spaces are fun to see. Everyone seems to be having a good time getting their hands in the dirt and watching things grow. Come join us!
