The events linked with Christ’s birth are of special interest to God’s people. In Luke 2:21-38 Jesus, on the eighth day after his birth, is circumcised in the temple, and 32 days later publicly presented there to the Lord.

Presumably these events were recorded in the temple, and the documents would be among the family’s keepsakes, since genealogies were prized to prove Jewish descent. Simeon and Anna, devoted worshippers at the temple, chanced to meet the holy family on this occasion, and were assured that Jesus was the long foretold Messiah.
