Redeemer Lutheran and St. Theodore

On Sunday, Dec. 1, the congregations of Redeemer Lutheran Church and St. Theodore of Canterbury Episcopal Church will celebrate the first Sunday of Advent with Rev. Brad Stienstra presiding. The Communion and worship service gathers at 13564 St. Andrews Drive 10:30 a.m. every Sunday.

Fellowship is held after service in the Fellowship Hall, with coffee, tea, cookies and snacks to enjoy. All are welcome.

The congregations continue to collect donations of canned and boxed foods for the hungry.

The Gospel lesson for this week is from Luke 21: 25-36.

On the First Sunday in Advent, Jesus warns his followers about the end times and when he will return again. He outlines signs of the coming tribulations.

Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place.” Yet, he has not returned.

All people of all generations think they are in the end times. The Jews believed that Jesus was coming back soon. Nostradamus foretold the end time on numerous occasions.

The world was going to end at the change of the century mark, the world was going to end in 2012, or in 10 years, 25 years, 40 years. Jesus flat out says that people will not know when this is going to happen. God is the only one who knows. The believer’s concern is not to know when it is going to happen, but to be prepared when it does happen and to continue the mission Jesus started. The believer’s call is to live the Christian life in love for the Lord and one another.

The Bible study is currently on a holiday break and will return Wednesday, Jan. 8, to finish the exploration of the Ten Commandments. The Bible study, led by Bishop Murray Finck, is held Wednesdays at noon.

Redeemer and St. Theodore will hold Advent reflection and supper services on Dec. 11 and 18 starting at 3 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The congregations will also hold a Christmas Eve service in the Sanctuary on Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 10:30 a.m. All are invited to come and bring friends, neighbors, and family. The service will be followed by a brunch in the Fellowship Hall.
