LW Men’s Golf Club
Friday Golf
On Nov. 8, nine players from the Leisure World Men’s Golf League confronted the David L. Baker Executive Golf Course (par 62) in Fountain Valley. The weather was sunny but cool with no wind. But it was a wet course from overnight watering. Baker has been fixing the course with the rear half of the tee boxes undergoing maintenance and several fairway sections roped off as under repair.
With tees set far forward, several of the par 4’s were drivable by the league’s big hitters. By shortening the course every golfer had a chance to shoot low, and subsequently, each golfer shot a net under par round with very some low scores.
In addition, there were six birdies—two by Sam Choi and one each by Gary Stivers, Clay Fischer, Bob Munn and Duke Park. Stivers and Park had fewest putts in their respective flights. Closest to the pins on the 100-yard par 3 third hole and 130-yard par 3 12th hole were Choi and Park.
A flight winners (gross score minus handicap): Stivers took first place with a remarkable 11 under 51; Fujio Norihiro second at 10 under 52; Choi and Fischer tied for third with 7 under 55; Jim Goltra took fourth at 4 under 58; with Dave LaCascia bringing up the rear at even par.
B flight winners: Munn placed first with a sensational 16 under par 46; Park, continuing to improve, took second with an 11 under 51; Bill McKusky got third.
Monday Golf
It was beautiful but cool morning that greeted nine Leisure World Men’s Golf League players at the Willowick Golf course (par 71) on Veterans Day Nov. 11. Significant maintenance of the course has been improving the course each time the League plays. It does, however, do nothing to shorten the length of the course. At 6,000

yards it is by far the longest course played. Without any water hazards, but large sand traps and significant rough, Willowick is always a challenge.
Accordingly, scores were average across the board with just one round under net par—Clay Fischer at 4 under 67. Fewest putts in the A flight was a tie between Sam Choi, Fujio Norihiro and Jim Goltra. In the B flight, it was Tom Ross. Closest to the pin on the 140-yard, par 3, 12th hole was Choi.
A flight winners: Fischer placed first with a nice 4 under 67; Goltra took second, at even par 71; Seon Kim took third; Choi and Norihiro tied for fourth; followed by Chris Lankford for fifth.
B flight winners: Ross placed first at 2 over 73; Duke Park took second; Bob Munn got third.
The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always full, so advance League reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. If interested in playing, contact Gary Stivers 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia (801) 674-5975.
