Learn about cat and kitten rescue
CATPAWS
Helen Sanders CatPAWS (Cat Protection and Welfare Society) will host Le Chic Chat Soiree on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Navy Golf Course in Cypress to provide a glimpse into the world of cat and kitten rescue not generally seen by the public. The event, which promises to be an inspiring evening of insight and hope, is open to all who want to support the organization’s efforts while enjoying dinner and entertainment.
People love their furry companions, whether it be feline or canine, and adopting a pet from a shelter is one of the most rewarding things CatPAWS does. Often the animal has been plucked from the street, or in the case of cats, dropped off as litters born to a “community cat,” sometimes feral, sometimes friendly, but most likely doomed to continue the cycle of procreation.
In reality these litters—often neo-natal—are usually marked for euthanasia because shelters don’t have the staff for round-theclock care, nor room in the shelter. Helen Sander’s CatPAWS is often called to rescue these kittens to a foster until they can be readied (usually two or three months later) to adoptive homes.
In the last two years, CatPAWS has launched an effort to take rescue a step further with its mobile spay/neuter clinic, helping to stem the tide of unwanted pregnancies in community cats. Working with “trappers,” CatPAWS has spayed and neutered over 1,000 cats/kittens in the past year. The intrepid trappers practice “TNR” (trap/neuter/return), so the cats are returned to their colonies but unable to procreate. Sometimes the cats are so receptive to humans they are adopted along the journey.
Join like-minded animal lovers on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Navy Golf Course ballroom for an evening featuring hosted cocktails and hors d’oeuvres beginning at 5 p.m. The reception will include games and an auction including gift cards to local restaurants, a behind-the-scenes tour of Union Station, tickets to the theater and much more. Dinner is served at 6:30 followed by special guest Hannah Shaw, The Kitten Lady, and other entertainment. The event ends at 9 p.m.
Tickets are $175 per person or $1,200 for a table of eight. Those who want to help but are unable to attend, are asked to consider a donation of any amount to help CatPAWS continue their mission to save more lives; $150 will buy dinner for a hard-working volunteer, but no amount is too small.
