Power outages affecting a handful of buildings or multiple Mutuals at once are not uncommon in this community. In fact, a few years back it was common to experience power outages on a regular basis until Southern California Edison made improvements by replacing many power lines, poles and transformers. After these improvements, outages became less frequent.

The lower frequency also lowered the importance of preparing for such events. Unfortunately, when an event like this does happen and catches residents ill-prepared, their first reaction is to call Security for help. Security staff are limited and will likely not be able to physically assist anyone. This is why I stress that every resident must plan to be self-sufficient. Remember: You’re On Your Own, this is an independent living community. The GRF and your Mutual do not have the resources to assist residents during this type of event.

The GRF and the Mutuals urge all residents to prepare for disasters, including residents with access and functional needs, partial or full dependence on powered medical devices, i.e. oxygen, hospital type beds and any other powered medical devices.

Preparing for power outages is no different than preparing for other disasters like earthquakes, floods, fires, etc.

Here are some tips for keeping safe during a power outage:

• Prepare a plan: Consider your daily routine, mobility, and medical needs. Create a crisis plan with clear instructions and an evacuation location.

• Have an emergency kit:

Include a flashlight, batterypowered radio, non-perishable food, water and first aid supplies. Also include blankets and warm clothing for cold weather.

• Have backup power:

Consider obtaining battery backup through your medical provider for medical equipment or consider a portable battery power station/generator capable of providing power for most household appliances or special needs equipment.

• Store food safely: Keep the doors of the refrigerator and freezer closed to keep food from spoiling. Refrigerated foods like butter, hard cheeses, and fresh fruits can remain safe to consume for a while without power.

• Use flashlights: Keep flashlights in different parts of the home.

Use battery-powered aids: If a senior has hearing or vision loss, use battery-powered flashlights, large print labels, or other aids to communicate and navigate.

Unplug electronics: Before planned outages, unplug sensitive electronics like computers. If you forget to unplug them, do so before the power is restored.

• Have a communication plan: Those who live alone should establish a communication plan with family or neighbors.

Keep your cell phone charged: During a power outage, residents should monitor their phones for LW Live messages or call Security to find out if the nearest Clubhouse is impacted by the outage before they head out to a Clubhouse seeking air conditioning to cool down or warmth in the winter.
