HUI O HULA

Hui O Hula is Leisure World’s Hawaiian dance club. Dancers meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for lessons and practice starting at 1 p.m.

Tuesday’s class is given in the mirror room upstairs at Clubhouse 6, and Thursday’s class meets outdoors at the Veterans Plaza between Clubhouse 3 and the LW Library, or inside a room at Clubhouse 3, when the weather turns unfavorable. All are welcome. Call 562-431-2242 for more class information.

In November, hula dancers welcome the cooler season with popular holiday hula such as “Winter Wonderland” and “Mele Kalikimaka.” The current dance subject is “Christmas In The Isles” again by Teresa Bright. Dancers are learning how to describe the cool breezes by making circles above the hear with the hula implement called pu’ili (bamboo rattles) and twinkling Christmas lights by tapping the bamboo sticks rapidly.

Hui O Hula is most appreciative of musical band Kapakahi led by Larry Yamashita, which plays hula music for the dancers in class. They had fun practicing together in Tuesday’s class this past week. Both hui (means group in Hawaiian/ Chinese) look forward to the next chance when they can kanikapila/jam again.

All, including men, are welcome to hula or just listen to the melodic Hawaiian songs.
