Choose low-calorie comfort foods for a long-term weight loss
WA-RITE
Wa-Rite is a female-only club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown. Women who want support on their weight-loss journey and to meet like-minded people are welcome to stop by.
At the Nov. 8 meeting, members learned that the club lost a total of 11.5 pounds that week. Shirley LaBrecque was named a top loser of the week with 4.5-pound loss. When asked how she lost that much weight in one week, LaBrecque was humorous and said she had no clue. However, she did admit to drinking a lot of water.
President Judy Chambers reached her short-term goal and was a speaker of the week. She shared 14 facts about emotional eating. For example, the feel good feeling from a chocolate only lasts three minutes, according to studies. Or, people who associate a cake with guilt as opposed to celebration are less likely to lose weight.
When it comes to gender differences, Chambers said that men prefer warm, hearty foods like steaks, casseroles and soups, while women prefer comfort snack foods such as chocolate or ice cream.
The members also learned that hormonal changes don’t trigger chocolate cravings; happy people can overeat too; chicken soup can make one feel less lonely; familiar foods can be comforting when away from home (think McDonalds); money shapes people’s perception of comfort foods, and those who are dieting are the most prone to comfort eating.
The weekly food for thought was: “My goal is for longterm health, and not for short-term results. I try to build a healthy eating habit every day.”
