LW POOL LEAGUE 8-BALL TOURNAMENT

The LW Pool League eight ball tournament on Nov. 2 was a unusual affair.

There were 12 two-person teams playing six rounds against different opponents. Going into the sixth and final round there were two teams with four wins and four teams with only three wins. Then a strange thing happened. The two teams with four wins lost and the four teams with three wins all won. This produced a six-team tie for first place.

Th e way it was resolved was to draw team numbers for opponents. This meant there would still be three teams in the running for first, second and third place money. It was decided to count the balls remaining for the opponents when the eight ball was made. The team which won most decisively would get the bye and the other two winners would play the team with the bye for the championship.

The three teams that won in the playoffs were Earick Ward and Brian Burke, Tom Zimmerman and Millie Larsen, and Dave Silva and Connie Terry. Silva and Terry beat their opponents by two balls and received the bye when the other two matches went down to the wire. Ward and Burke beat Zimmerman and Larsen to qualify for the final match against Silva and Terry.

In the final match Silva and Terry had the solid balls and Silva undercut the bridge the last ball before the eight. Ward made the last stripe ball and left Burke a long shot on the eight in the corner, which he made to win the tournament.

Since ties are so common, in future eight ball tournaments the club will probably use the opponents balls left on the table as a measure to break ties.

Brian Burke and Earick Ward (l-r) fi rst place; Connie Terry and Dave Silva, second; Milly Larsen and Tom Zimmerman, third.
