by Ruth Osborn

Communications Director

The Facilities Committee met Nov. 5 to work through a full agenda that included street signs and repairs to Mary’s Gate outside the St. Andrews Gate. Committee chair Teri Nugent appointed Mike Banfield as the new vice chair. She thanked Susan Hopewell for her service, recognizing that Hopewell also serves as GRF vice president. That, in addition to her committee duties, is a full-time job.

The following is a partial recap of highlights. Visit lwsb.com to watch the entire meeting.

event would be smaller than the community-wide collection that happened Sept. 25.

Instead of six trucks, there would be a single truck and driver situated at the Community Gardens on a Saturday morning. The exact schedule will be determined if the board approves the project.

At the inaugural event in September, the Salvation Army collected six truckloads of clothing, small furniture and household goods that did not end up as trash at the GRF dumpster at the 1.8-acre site.

In an average month, the community fills five roll-out bins, which are emptied at a cost of about $750 each. The Salvation Army partnership was the brainchild of GRF Director Nick Massetti, and the project was set in motion by Vice Chair Banfield.

Projects Update

GRF Facilities Senior Director Mark Weaver reported on several ongoing projects, including 10 electric service maintenance vehicles electric are set to be delivered this month.

A project to add electric vehicle charging stations is in process with completion expected in the spring.

Starting in January, the traffic signal and intersection at Golden Rain and St. Andrews will be upgraded with new pedestrian signals. The painting of Clubhouse 2 is set to start in mid-November. Materials to replace roofs at Clubhouses 3 and 4 are on order with work set to begin in January.

Tree Trimming at St. Andrews and Oakmont The trees will be trimmed this month in answer to residents’ complaints about line of sight issues. A speed cushion was recently installed at the intersection as an additional safety measure. The committee agreed to further study the intersection at its January meeting.

Bench Donation

The committee agreed to accept a bronze bus bench donated by LW resident Jojo Weingart, known to many as the Hui O Hula president.

She donated $3,500 to replace and cover an existing bus bench at Del Monte in front of Building 46. The old bench will be relocated to Mutual 15. She donated the funds to the Golden Age Foundation.

St. Mary’s Gate Repair The committee voted to recommend the installation of a new swing door operating system at Mary’s Gate for a total cost not to exceed $6,700, reserve funding.Mary’s Gate was installed in 2017 and has had many repairs over the years.

The cost of adding a meter at this location was prohibitively expensive, so Mutual 15 agree to allow the GRF to use power from its closest laundry room to Mary’s Gate paving the way for the installation of a reliable gate system.
