Guys and Gals Tournament

GOLF

On Oct. 30, a cool but sunny morning greeted 29 teams for the Guys and Gals tournament of one man and one woman of differing abilities at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. The teams contended for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.

There was little wind, and the golfers finally got a sunny morning to play golf with friends and neighbors. The course was in fair shape with good fairways, but the greens were bumpy and uneven after the recent aeration and sanding. The fine playing conditions contributed to outstanding scores, with 27 of the 29 teams being net at or below par, and there were 11 circle hole winners. But owing to the inconsistent greens, only 39 birdies were carded compared to 52 for the last tournament.

Low net score for the round was 12 under 42 by Steve Walker and Susie Kim. Closest to the pin for the men was Ron Steele and Jae H. Lee, and for the women it was Linda Herman and Hae Lee.

Tournament statistics: Overall average gross score for all 29 teams was 60.1 strokes or 6+ over par. Overall average net scores for all teams was 50 strokes or 4 under par.

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-8): Bob Barnum and Kyung Ju, first place; Mike Mayfield and Nancy Tye, second; Bill Lyons and Kyung Ju, and Bob and Janice Turner, third; Dave LaCascia and Liz Meripol, fourth.

C flight winners (handicaps of 12-18): Paul Shellenberger and Lynn Baidack, first place; Marv Jones and Marilyn Hewitt, second; James and Grace Choi, third; Joon Sup and Young Sil, fourth.

The next Guys and Gals Tournament will be on Nov. 20, then every third and fifth Wednesday, if there is one. The men’s tournament is played every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Those who had planned to play in any tournament and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-684-0426, or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975 as soon as possible.
