Beginners welcome to try Hawaiian dance at Hui O Hula’s weekly classes
Hui O Hula offers Hawaiian dance lessons and practice every Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday’s class is taught upstairs in Clubhouse 6 at 1:15 p.m. On Thursday, dancers meet at Veterans Plaza at 1 p.m. In inclement weather, the group meets inside a room at Clubhouse 3.
Traditional hula should be danced barefoot. In class at practice, dancers may wear soft booties or socks. For more information about classes, call 562-431-2242.
The current class subject is “Ka Lehua ‘Ula” (Red Myrtle Blossom), composed in 2007 by Weldon Kekauoha. Being his first Hawaiian composition, Kekauoha intended the song to be about the red lehua flower, but it evolved into a love song for his wife. This hula/dance is especially meaningful because the LW hula dancers love dancing to romantic songs and stories. Dancers are learning to express how the beauty of the Lehua flower (also meaning “sweetheart”) attracts the ‘i’iwi bird/Hawaiian honeycreeper by flapping their arms/wings.
It is never too late to learn to dance. Hui O Hula welcomes all to give the Hawaiian dance a try.
