LW Men’s Golf League
Afoggyandverydampmorning greeted seven Leisure World men’s golf league players at the David L. Baker Executive Golf Course on Oct. 11. The greens had been aerated and sanded and were extremely slow and erratic. Because of this, a twoputt maximum was instituted, meaning once on the green, players could putt out and count all strokes or take two putts and pick up. This contributed to lower scores and fewest putts was not part of the rewards.
Every player was significantly net under par, but there were no birdies due to the inconsistent condition of the greens. Dave LaCascia was closest to the pin on the 110-yard par-3 third hole, and Sam Choi was closest on the 110-yard par-3 15th.
All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).
A flight winners: LaCascia, 8 under 54, first place; Clay Fischer, 7 under 55, second; Gary Stivers, 6 under 56, third; Fujio Norihiro, 5 under 57, fourth; Choi, 2 under 60, fifth.
B flight winners: Duke Park and Bill Zurn, 8 under 54, first place.
Eight players confronted the Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on Oct. 14, and the course won. The weather was overcast and cool, with a reasonably dry course. The front nine was being aerated and sanded so the players played the very long back nine twice. Greens were in excellent condition, but fairways were just damp enough to cause rolling issues, making getting distances and proper club selection a challenge. Only two players shot net under par —Clay Fischer and Tom Ross.
Fischer and Ross also had fewest putts in their respective flights. Closest to the pin contest was won by Jim Goltra on No. 12 and Sam Choi on No. 17. Choi, Fischer, Dave LaCascia, and Ross each had one birdie.
A flight winners: Fischer, 4 under par 67, first place; Gary Stivers, second; Choi, third; Goltra, fourth; LaCascia, fifth.
B flight winners: Tom Ross, 5 under 66, first place; Bob Munn, second; Duke Park, third.
The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
