Faith Christian Assembly

Faith Christian Assembly’s weekly Bible study is currently studying Jesus’ teaching on prayer. Many Christians struggle with prayer at some point in their faith journey; not only to be disciplined in prayer, but also finding the right words.

In Matthew 6:1-15, Jesus speaks at length about the importance of the motivation of the heart both in praying and in doing good deeds. He said that the motive of a person’s hearts must be to do good to please God,“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward,” Matthew 6:5.

Jesus is talking about the people who do things simply to be seen. One example of this is the news stories about celebrities who give a portion of their day to volunteer at a soup kitchen during the holidays with cameras following them. This is what Jesus was talking about: don’t do acts of charity to be seen by men; don’t blow a trumpet to get people’s attention when giving an offering; don’t pray in a loud and self-aggrandizing way.

Jesus said of those whose motivation is to be seen of men will have their reward, and therefore, must expect none from God, “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly” Matthew 6:6.

Jesus encountered all the time constraints that people on earth have, yet he lived in the practice of secret prayer:“Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, he went out and departed to a solitary place; and there he prayed,” Mark 1:3.5 Join Faith Christian Assembly each week for service.
