Club seeks new officers; last day to nominate is Friday, Oct. 18
GENEALOGY CLUB
The Leisure World Genealogy Club will hold a general meeting Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. All residents are invited. Social hour begins at 9:30 a.m. with coffee, tea, and snacks.
Genealogist Christine Cohen will present “Fishing in Every Pond: Cousin Baiting.” She will discuss the many ways to reach out to distant living cousins to help people expand their pedigree chart forward in time. People may find family treasures, photos, DNA test takers, and information that will break down a brick wall. The group will also explore online trees.
Cohen is a long-time member of the Whittier Area Genealogy Society and is currently its program director.
She is also a member of the El Redondo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (past first vice regent), the Society of Daughters of Holland Dames and the Association of Professional Genealogists.
Her interest in genealogy began in 1977 when the TV mini-series “Roots” aired. Her enthusiasm was piqued when she was given a pedigree chart, commissioned by her maternal grandfather, of their Dutch heritage from the New Netherlands in the 1650s. Cohen is a native Californian, a graduate of UCLA in political science, and has recently retired to pursue her genealogy interest full-time.
Club election of officers and changes in bylaws will be discussed at the meeting. Nominations and self-nominations will be accepted for club president, vice president, secretary and treasurer until Friday, Oct. 18. Voting will take place at the Oct. 23 general meeting. The elected officers will be installed in December at the club’s holiday party. The new term begins in January 2025. People will also vote to approve changes to the club bylaws.
There will be no club meeting in November. This month’s Theme Thursday topics are:
• Oct. 17: Disease codes on death certificates
• Oct. 24: Researching with Liz Rasmussen and Janet Lessin
