Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach dared six Leisure World Men’s Golf League players and four resident guests—Ann Tran, Ralph Koizumi, Fernando Gumiran and Reuben Garcia—to play their best on Sept. 20.

Numerous water hazards, narrow tree-lined fairways, and diabolically sloped greens demand the players plan each shot rather than just go for it.

With that in mind, only two players net under par with just two birdies—one each by Sam Choi and Clay Fischer. Choi had the trifecta by having the lowest net score, winning both closest to the pins challenges, and fewest putts for the round.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).

Winners include Choi, 2 under 69, first place; Fischer, 70, second; Fujio Norihiro, Gary Stivers and Duke Park, third; Dave LaCascia, fourth.

It was a gloomy, overcast, foggy morning that greeted 12 players at the David L. Baker Executive Golf Course on Sept. 23. The course was extremely wet, however the dampness made the greens very receptive to accurate shots. Even though 10 of the golfers scored net under par, there were just two birdies—one each by Sam Choi and Larry Hillhouse.

Baker is the shortest course the league plays. With numerous water hazards and sand traps, plus tree-lined fairways, accurate tee and approach shots are required to score well. Due to the wet course conditions every golfer suffered with distance control and club selection.

A flight winners: Choi,7 under 55, first place; Jim Goltra, 5 under 57, second; Chris Lankford, Hillhouse and Seon Kim, 4 under 58, third; Fujio Norihiro, Clay Fischer, Dave LaCascia and Gary Stivers rounded out the flight.

B flight winners: Bob Munn, 5 under 57, first; Bill Zurn, second; Tom Ross, third.

Lankford and Choi tied for fewest putts for A flight, and Ross had fewest in the B. Fischer was closest to the pin on the 100-yard par-3 third hole, and LaCascia was closest on the 12th hole. The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required. There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par) are also rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674 5975.
