LW Men’s Golf League
The David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley was challenged by eight LW Men’s Golf League players on Sept. 13. The early morning was overcast and cool—a significant change from the 95-degree weather over the previous 12 days. Water hazards and tree-lined fairways made the players manage rather than attack the course, which was initially wet, making the large greens receptive.
Every player was net under par with seven birdies—two each by Clay Fischer and Jim Goltra, and one each by Sam Choi, Chris Lankford and Bill McKusky. Goltra and McKusky had fewest putts in the A and B flights respectively. Lankford won both closest-to-the-pins challenge on holes No. 3 and 15.
All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).
A flight winners: Goltra, 8 under 54, first place; Choi and Fischer, second; Gary Stivers, third; Lankford, fourth; Dave LaCascia, fifth.
B flight winners: Duke Park, 6 under 56, first place; Bill McKusky, second.
Eight league members played Willowick Golf Course on Sept. 16. At 6,000 yards, par-71, Willowick is the longest course the league plays.
Course length and the weather played a part in scoring with only two scores net under par. With a cold and misty start of the morning, followed by overcast and partial sun, ending up with rain for one hole, then wind and sunny skies, havoc was played on shot accuracy and club selection.
A flight winners: Clay Fischer, 2 under 69, first place; Jim Goltra, second; Sam Choi, Fujio Norihiro, and Gary Stivers, third; Dave LaCascia, fourth.
B flight winners: Bill McKusky, first place, followed by
Tom Ross. LaCascia had fewest putts for the A flight, and Ross had fewest in the B. Norihiro was closest to the pin on both the 140-yard par-3 fourth and 12th holes. Only Choi had a birdie.
The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
