DONATION EVENT

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, the GRF and The Salvation Army will team up to fill six trucks with items donated by Leisure World residents. The trucks will be on site from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The trucks will be located at six locations scattered throughout Leisure World: Clubhouse 1, 2 and 4, the Amphitheater, and at the corners of Fairfield and Oakmont, and St. John and Del Monte.

The event was spearheaded by GRF Director Mike Banfield. Banfield, who represents Mutual 8, hopes the event will reduce the cost of trash removal services in Leisure World.

Residents currently dispose of largebulk and other items at the two specified bins at the 1.8-acre site. Much of the detritus comes from move-outs. It costs $700 every time the roll-off bins are emptied, and the community is filling five or more bins each month, Banfield told the GRF Board at the Aug. 27 general meeting.

The goal is to collect the equivalent of at least two roll-off bins that day. Banfi eld hopes this could become a regular collection event, which could save the community $1,500 a month, the cost of removing two bins of trash.

During the event, the Salvation Army will accept a wide variety of household goods, clothing, sports equipment, and small to medium furniture.

IRS donation receipts will be issued on request. GRF Security and volunteers will be present to assist and control traffic flow.

Donation bags and flyers are available from Mutual boards, from the Clubhouse 6 coffee counter and the News Office. People are encouraged to take what they need, but it is not necessary to use the provided bag.

All proceeds will support The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers, a program that offers up to 180 days of free housing, counseling and employment opportunities to those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse.
