LWer will perform in organ concert at local church

Concert organist and Mutual 7 resident Peter Bates will be joined by Long Beach musician David York in a free organ concert—featuring two organists at two organs—on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Covenant Presbyterian Church, located at 607 E. 3rd St. (at Atlantic Avenue), Long Beach.

Bates and York, who have worked together many times, will play compositions from Bach to Souza. Covenant’s famous Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ will be joined by a Rodgers digital touring organ provided by Church Keyboard Center, which was “voiced” in 2023 to recreate the sounds of Covenant’s pipe organ.

“This is a very rare opportunity to hear a fine pipe organ alongside a fine digital organ,” Bates said. “The fact that this particular touring organ was voiced using Covenant’s pipe organ as a reference for each note makes this concert even more unique.”
