Learn about the AES Battery Storage System on Sept. 16
EMERGENCY INFORMATION COUNCIL
The Emergency Information Council (EIC) will host three speakers from the Alamitos Energy Center (AES) Electricity Generating Plant on Monday, Sept. 16, at 1:30 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 9.
The AES Alamitos Battery Storage System (BESS) was the world’s first stand-alone energy storage project for local capacity. It lies just a few hundred yards east of Leisure World. It was specifically built to replace a gas-fired plant to meet peak demand in the evening when the sun goes down. It contains 1 million lithium-ion batteries in boxcar sized containers, all under one roof. With the increasing incidence of EV battery fires, residents might be interested in how this installation is being safeguarded from contributing to a disaster for Leisure World.
AES speakers will include:
• Michael Huynh, senior stakeholder relations manager, clean energy.
• Jose Perez, director of operations, Alamitos Energy Facility.
• Mark Miller, general manager, Alamitos Energy Facility. Huynh leads stakeholder relations and community engagement for AES’ clean energy projects.
Miller has served many roles at AES for over 35 years. Perez has likewise held many positions at AES for over 25 years. Both were introduced to power generation during their service in the U.S. Navy’s nuclear program.
