Wa-Rite for weight loss: right place, right time, one goal

Female residents who want to find support on their weightloss journey and meet likeminded people are welcome to stop by one of Wa-Rite’s meetings.

The Wa-Rite is a womenonly club and meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. Those dimes go to the person who lost the most weight that week. LW ID cards must be shown.

The biggest loser and speaker of the week, Judy Chambers, talked about tracking calories in a journal or by using smartphone apps or a website. Tracking helps to see a bigger picture of an overall food intake and its nutritional value, and keeps people accountable of food choices they make.

Food tracking may also be a good tool for people with digestive issues to better understand potential food sensitivities and intolerances.

The cons of food tracking are time commitment that not everyone is willing to undertake and, according to some studies, the development of a food disorder. Although logging in a daily food intake even half of the time may still help with weight loss. Chambers suggests having a weight goal with a clear plan and log in the food right after it’s eaten, measure the portions if possible, and remember to count the beverages such as juice, non-diet soda, milk and alcohol.

Lastly, don’t let guilt take over any treats and splurges that may happen on days when people feel off track.

Chambers’s food for thought was: “Right now, at Wa-Rite, I am in the right place, at the right time, trying to do the right thing.”
