LW Men’s Golf League

Eight Leisure World Men’s Golf League members contested the par-71 5,600-yard Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach on Aug. 23. The greens and fairways continue to be well maintained. This tree-lined course has numerous water and sand hazards to capture errant shots. It was a sunny morning that warmed up quickly with full sun for the entire round.

The course was initially very wet due to heavy watering, and the greens were extremely slow. Even with a strong breeze for the last half of the round, scores were good with eight birdies— two each by Jim Goltra, Sam Choi and Clay Fischer, and one each by Dave LaCascia and Tim Looney.

Fischer and Goltra tied for first with 6 under 65; Looney was second at even par; LaCascia and Gary Stivers tied for third, followed by Sam Choi and Bill McKusky. Closest to the pin on the seventh hole was Fischer and on the difficult No. 16 it was Looney, who also had fewest putts.

The David L. Baker Golf Course was challenged Aug. 26 by 10 league members. It is a demanding course even though it is flat and only par 62 at 4,000-yards. It was a bright, sunny morning, but the greens were very wet and inconsistent due to heavy over-night watering.

Chris Lankford, Clay Fischer, Sam Choi and Gary Stivers tied for first place with net 56, Fujio Norihiro took second with 57; Tom Ross, Dave LaCascia and Jim Goltra tied for third at 58; Seon Kim was fourth with 59; and Larry Hillhouse took fifth. Goltra had fewest putts for the round. Choi was closest to the pin on No. 3 and Stivers was closest on No. 12. Two birdies were carded by Goltra and Kim, and Choi, Stivers, and Lankford each had one.

The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holesin- one and eagles (2 under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
