LW Men’s Golf Club
The Leisure World Men’s Golf Club played on Aug. 28 under overcast skies, but warm conditions, at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. Fifty-seven variously skilled golfers participated in three flights and vied for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot circle rewarded) and two closest-tothe- pin challenges.
The course is still looking good but with a few bare spots on the fairways plus a few weedy spots on several greens. With the players continuing to repair their divots and ball marks, tees and greens are looking better. Golfers need to keep their end up by fixing their divots and ball marks, and then one more.
Playing conditions were good so it was surprising that only 26 of the 57 rounds were net at or under par, yet there were 77 birdies (up from 72 last month), and 17 circle hole winners, up from 10.
Best net score of the round was Fernando Gumiran at 13 under 41, followed by Joon Sup Yoon and Hyon Shin at 47, and two others at 48. Closest to the pin on both the sixth and 15th holes was Rolando Ramirez at 2 feet 9 inches, and 1 foot 7 inches, respectively. Lowest gross scores were John Kolthoff and Bill Lyons at 4 under 50, followed by Marc Rice at 56.
All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).
A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Kolthoff, first place; Jae H. Lee, second; Jae Choi, third; Young J. Kim and Lyons, fourth; Mike Mayfield, fifth; Mark Rice, sixth; Alan Sewell, Tom Owens and Rolando Ramirez, seventh.
B flight winners (handicaps of 6-12): Yoon, first place; Young Lee, second; Daniel Keum, third; Terry Thrift, fourth; Garry Newhall, fifth; Peter Kim, sixth; Bruce Bowles and Trai Nguyen, seventh; Marv Jones and Jack Haskins, eighth.
C flight winners (handicaps of 13-18): Gumiran, first place; Shin, second; Ben Benjamins, third; Dennis Jensen, fourth; Steve Kang and Rick Reed, fifth; Won G. Park, sixth; Daniel Mahoney and Joe Wierzbicki, seventh; James Choi, Mike Carlson and Dennis Anctil, eighth. The Men’s Golf Club summer picnic was held after the tournament in the Clubhouse 1 picnic area. Forty members and guests consumed hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and desserts plus drinks and chips. A good time was had by all. Next up will be the annual Christmas party in December.
A shotgun/scramble is scheduled for Oct. 2. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at all tournaments starting on Tuesday, Sept 3. Only 54 players will be accepted to play so come early for tickets. Keith Koss of Total Carpet Care—714-4212612—is helping to sponsor the tournament.
The next men’s tournament will be on Sept. 11 and then every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The Guys and Gals Tournament is played on the third and fifth Wednesdays (if there is one) of each month. Those who had planned to play and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-6840426 or Alan Sewell at 541-3248558. Arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled tee time.
