LW Men’s Golf League
Eight Leisure World Men’s Golf League members descended on the David L. Baker Executive Golf Club in Fountain Valley on Aug. 16. The par-62 4,000-yard course continues to be well maintained with nice greens but with a number of water and sand hazards to snare wayward shots.
It was initially an overcast morning that warmed up quickly with full sun for over half the round. The course was very wet due to heavy watering overnight and the greens were extremely slow. Even so, scores were good for the round with every player net under par. Although this course is relatively short, the hazards and tree lined fairways make well placed shots a must.
In the A flight, Clay Fischer placed first with 8 under 54, with two birdies and closest to the pin on the 110-yard par-3 15th hole; Jim Goltra was second at 4 under and a birdie. Dave LaCascia placed third and had a birdie, followed by Fujio Norihiro with two birdies and closest to the pin on the 100-yard par-3 third hole, then Sam Choi with a birdie, and Gary Stivers.
Daniel Mahoney placed first in the B flight at 1 under and Bill McKusky took second including a birdie and fewest putts for the round.
Willowick Golf Course was challenged Aug. 19 by eight league members. A demanding course due to its length and tree-lined fairways, the course is flat 6,000-yards and par-71. It was a bright, sunny morning, and the course was very wet with heavy over-night watering.
Chris Lankford took first place with net 70, and he was closest to the pin on the 140yard par-3 fourth hole and had a birdie; Tom Ross was second; Dave LaCascia took third place with a birdie; Gary Stivers was fourth and had fewest putts for the round, followed by Sam Choi who was closest to the pin on No. 12 and had a birdie; then Fujio Norihiro and Clay Fischer with a birdie.
The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 1520 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-6745975.
