LW Men’s Golf League

Six Leisure World Men’s Golf League members attacked the Willowick Golf Club in Santa Ana on Aug. 9. The par-71, 6,000-yard course continues to be better maintained with excellent greens. It was a sunny morning that warmed up quickly, but the course was wet due to heavy watering of brown and bare spots.

Scores were only average for the round, which is typical for this long course. Jim Goltra placed first with a 4 under 67 and two birdies, plus he was closest to the pin on the 140-yard par-3 12th hole and tied for fewest putts. Sam Choi was second at one under par and tied for fewest putts. Dave LaCascia and Clay Fischer tied for third, followed by Fujio Norihiro and Gary Stivers who also tied for fewest putts.

River View Golf Course was contested on Aug. 12 by 10 league members. River View is a 5,800-yard par-71 course that runs parallel to and frequently crosses the Santa Ana Riverbed.

A flight winners: Goltra, net 64, first place; Chris Lankford and Choi, second; Fischer, third; Norihiro and LaCascia, fourth. LaCascia was closest to the pin on No. 9. Norihiro had fewest putts and Goltra, Lankford and Fischer each had a birdie.

B flight winners: Bill Zurn and Daniel Mahoney, 3 under 68, first place; Tom Ross, even par 71, second; McKusky, third and was closest to the pin on No. 2. Zurn had fewest putts.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can call Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-6745975.
