LW ORCHESTRA

Leisure World Community Orchestra members started their own summer “band camp” and will hold a free, informal backstage concert on the Amphitheater stage on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 1:15 p.m.

The summer “band camp” was formed when orchestra musicians who were eager to continue playing throughout the summer asked the group’s assistant director, Linda DeRungs, to rehearse them during nine weekly noontime sessions. About half of the orchestra’s regular-season musicians, usually under the direction of Dr. Samuel Kim, joined the summer session.

Their 45-minute performance will present a wide variety of musical styles, from tangos and marches to a quirky version of “Pop Goes the Weasel.” To keep players and the audience cool for this 1:15 p.m. concert, both will be seated on the shaded Amphitheater stage.

Concertgoers should enter through the backstage doors on the Amphitheater’s north side nearest the post office.

LW Orchestra violinists Hanna Choi (l), Betsy Brandel (r) and clarinetist Mark Fronke (center) warm up before one of the summer "band camp" rehearsals.
