LW ANNIVERSARY

Connie and Jay Young traveled to Carmel, California, with their daughter, granddaughter and her husband to celebrate 71 years of marriage. They were married on July 25,1953, after Jay graduated from the University of Redlands. Connie was also a student there as a junior. They were married in Long Beach, California, at Jay’s dad’s church, Grace Methodist Church. There were 400 people in attendance, Connie’s sister was the maid of honor and Jay’s brother’s was the best man. They had their honeymoon in San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite.

They stayed in Redlands until Jay was drafted in the Korean War. After the service, Connie completed her college degree at Long Beach State and Jay completed his master’s degree in education. They both started teaching afterward. Connie taught for a total of 30 years in Long Beach and Seal Beach, and Jay taught for 35 years in Compton and primarily in Downey, where he was a varsity basketball coach for 30 years.

Connie and Jay have had an exciting 71 years of marriage, raising three children and helping raise six grandchildren. They enjoyed traveling to 63 countries. They drove with their boys three times across the United States and have been to every state. They have also driven the motor home through Canada and parts of Mexico. They bought a home in Seal Beach in 1959 and lived there over 50 years. They enjoyed it so much that they decided to move into Leisure World in 2010. They have been active in many projects. Connie sang in a couple of choirs. Jay has been involved with art and also in the choirs. Both played bridge and are “life masters.”

They hope to stay active traveling, enjoying their family and celebrating their 72nd year.
