The Impaired Vision and Hearing Club
The impaired vision support group meets on the second Wednesday of each month, at 10 a.m., in Clubhouse 3, Room 9.
The hard of hearing support group meets on the third Tuesday of each month, at 10 a.m., in Clubhouse 3, Room 9. Meetings are held each month, the groups do not meet in December. The meetings are closed captioned.
The club’s general meetings are on the fourth Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. There are no meetings in July, August, November and December. Membership is open to anyone. The annual fee to join is $3. The dues for the year are collected in January.
At the Impaired Vision meetings people with different impairment stages (with the visual acuity of 5-25) talk about issues that arise due to their disability, and share helpful tips and resources on rides to medical appointments, vision assessments, iPhone accessibility and more.
The Impaired Hearing Support Group was formed about a year ago. Some of its members are profoundly deaf, have a cochlear implant or just venturing into the hearing loss arena. Just like at the vision support groups, sometimes up to 20 members gather at a table and share personal experiences, struggles and tips. People are welcome to come once or on a regular basis to learn more about living with hearing loss.
Once a month, the club has general meetings with guest speakers. Sometimes it’s an eye doctor or an audiologist, a dermatologist, a Medicare agent, or something of interest to all parties. The club’s board member Don Craig came up with a much-appreciated method to close caption what is spoken at the meetings to a TV set.
Snacks are offered at the club’s general meetings. When there are no guest speakers (in June), the club finds other ways to entertain. This year, it was the hula dancers performance, Hawaiian pizza and virgin Mai Tais. In December, there is a free luncheon for all the members, served by the members of the Lions Club.
